Professor Declan Murphy is Consultant Urologist, Director of Genitourinary (GU) Oncology, and Director of Robotic Surgery at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, Australia, and Professorial Fellow at the Sir Peter MacCallum Department of Oncology, University of Melbourne. He has previously been Consultant Urologist at Guys & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London. Declan specialises full-time in GU Oncology, prostate cancer in particular, and his private practice is based at Cancer Specialists in Melbourne.
Following completion of his specialist urology training at Guy’s & St Thomas’, and having been awarded the FRCS Urol in 2006, he spent a year in Melbourne completing a Fellowship in Laparoscopic & Robotic Urology under the supervision of Professor Tony Costello. He returned to Melbourne in 2010 to take up his current positions and was awarded the FRACS in the Specialty of Urology by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2011. Declan has a very strong academic background and has published extensively in the area of GU oncology, prostate cancer in particular. He is an internationally recognised key opinion leader in all aspects of prostate cancer, and lectures extensively on these topics all around the world. He was promoted to full Professor at the University of Melbourne in 2019.
Declan is a Founding Director of Cancer Specialists, a specialist multidisciplinary cancer practice comprising top specialists from Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He sees both insured and uninsured patients at the Cancer Specialists consulting rooms in Richmond and Parkville. Uninsured patients requiring surgery are booked at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and insured patients are offered options for surgery at either Epworth Richmond or Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Declan’s practice is completely focussed on GU Oncology, with prostate cancer accounting for more than 90% of his clinical and research workload. He is a very high volume prostate cancer surgeon, and does not look after any general urology conditions.
Declan is highly active in social media with a large Twitter following. He blogs regularly for the BJUI where he is Associate Editor responsible for social media, and co-hosts the GU Cast podcast, focussing on the world of GU Oncology. His wife Lisa and two sons enjoy all things Melbourne, especially a bicycle ride around the city’s trails at the weekend.
